weekend wanders

This weekend I had a quick getaway down to the Blackwood river with a friend from Freo. It was such a relief to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. For me, it was also the realisation that it isn't actually that difficult to get out of the city for a quick country refresh. I had become quite accustomed to the ease of adventure living in Broome this year, and it was nice to realise that adventure can be accessed with ease from here too.
We stayed in Bridgetown for one night, and travelled to Donnybrook, Balingup and Nannup. Exploring the antique, bric a brack and natural product shops. We walked along and camped by the Blackwood river and in the morning bought fresh produce from farmers at their fortnightly markets. Who knew you could buy a selection of end of season stone fruit for $2 a kilo? I came home with all kinds of goodies: fresh farm free range eggs, home made fig jam, and preservative free shiraz...filling up the boot of the car before driving off between native forests and farming properties.
I was quite surprised at how dry everything remains down south, especially as the otherside of our country is flooding almost everywhere you can think of. I look forward to doing the same trip again in the wintertime to see the green...although I have a feeling that Bridgetown will live up to it's nickname of Fridgetown that time of year, as it already fluctuated from 31 down to 11 degrees over the weekend!

Through the forest glades I wander
