I headed to Derby town to visit two of my friends who are based there this year
and to go to the rodeo together.
Derby and the rodeo taught me many things:
- If you buy a bull riding cowboy for $50, when others come with a $500 price tag, they probably dont ride very well and may not win you big bucks - JW you did not do us proud, but we did cheer for you - sorry if that brought you shame.
- Rodeos are much more fun the second time round, particularly when you know you are not responsible for fixing broken bones, and when the games/events make sense (okay so I am still not 100% rodeo savvy, as proven by calling the events games...)
- Dont rock up late on the last day of a rodeo...you will inevitably end up with a lovely shady spot to place your picnic mat behind a tree which blocks almost all action.
- Some cowboys can dance...and others...really cant
- Dont get into in-depth conversations about refugees at the Spini - you may end up with someone right up in your grill doing their best to get you fired up. Also - dont be surprised if they still hit on you after you get mad.
- That I really do have a soft spot for country music, and I may even dance (and sing) to it publicly
- Cowgirl boots are going on my shopping list
- I cannot dance as well as the locals, unfortunately I have been reminded I never will be black on the inside. sigh.
- Maybe I stand out...far too many people recognised me from Halls Creek Rodeo.
- The title of doctor carries a responsibility that has already begun to be placed on my shoulders, student doctor still implies that I am someone with responsibility/knowledge/skills
- You never know when having a first aid certificate will come in handy. And if you have one you should be prepared to use it. Just take a deep breath and help to the level of your ability and remember that you aren't God, but you can help someone in need.
- Life is short, it should be lived with gusto, and with a good song. You never know which song will be your last.
- I am a feeler of my feelings (which is healthy - its only not helpful if you let them get in the way, which I didn't, so all is good)
- Good friends are important, in good moments and in tough ones. A good hug, a prayer, delicious home made meal, projected movie, and good night sleep always help.
- Derby town isn't all that bad, in fact I might even like it...and may well be back
Mr Whippy this one is for you. thank you for the music.
