This Easter for me was one like none I have had in several years.
For the first time (to hazard a guess) I did not attend one "church service"
or do anything I would call "traditional" for Easter...usually Easter is a time
I find myself on camps with copious amounts of other young adults and teens
spending time with community to discover and rediscover relationships with
God expressed in a horrific and yet love filled act, a cross.
This year I spent Easter with my parents in Fremantle. We largely spent the
time together (but did manage to visit an Easter Camp!) and didnt really dedicate
time to ponder on Easter deliberately. Although Easter didnt feel lost, It felt
different - but my heart still pondered this holiday that we as Australia
still celebrate - even if it is in ways that my head and my heart struggle to comprehend.
How did Easter, become a time dedicated to chocolate and a bunny?
And I'd be interested to hear from others what significance Easter holds to you?
In a global finacial crisis and when so many people are in need why do we still
spend our money and our holidays on ourselves, and things that dont matter?
And I ask this to myself too - knowing that I am as caught up in this trap as the
next person.
So many questions, so much to think and ponder on and talk through..
if you'll join me...

on other notes:
I did enjoy my four day holiday - and am looking forward to the next few days
that I have off of med school. It was great to see my parents and have my
hug quota filled once again, and to show them a bit of my world and introduce
them to people who mean a lot to me here. It was a really special time, just to be
normal together, and play silly card games, and to be family - share in
each others frustrations, smile and laugh together.
It is also great to have Colleen here - it feels so normal to have a good
friend here in this context. Freo feels like home - and that makes me smile
with love and ponderous thoughts

"How did Easter, become a time dedicated to chocolate and a bunny?" ... i was thinking the exact same thing over the weekend and also about Christmas festivities.
ReplyDeleteWent on my first easter camp ever over the weekend was a good time hanging out with some rad crew .. Was kinda surprised the talks weren't on the easter story though
One massive thing I've been considering over the weekend is the amount of chocolate companies that emerge out of nowhere over easter and the rediculous amounts of chocolate unethically manufactured, makes me feel sick.
mmm... anyhow just some random thoughts
